Celiac disease

Celiac disease is sometimes called Coeliac disease in Australia and celiac disease in the United States and often celiac sprue in other countries, it is pronounced as (“seel-ee-ak’).  Celiac disease occurs genetically in certain people of all ages .It is an autoimmune disorder that affects the small intestine. People affected with this disease can suffer from symptoms ranging from pain or discomfort in the digestive tract. They can also have chronic constipation or diarrhea, In children the failure to thrive is noticeable also. Other symptoms can be anemia and fatigue or problems with other organs. Vitamin deficiencies are also noticed in people with this disorder as the small intestine has a reduced capacity to absorb nutrients from food. Celiac disease is triggered by a reaction to gliadin and prolamin in the small intestines of affected people. These two protein compounds combine in food to form gluten which triggers the immune system response.
Celiac disease is hereditary and is passed on from parents genes to their siblings This disease can affect people of all ages  both female and male alike .

The main genes which are directly associated with coeliac disease are HLA DQ2 and HLA DQ8. Either one or both of these genes have been found in virtually every person tested with coeliac disease. Up to thirty percent of the population carry one or both of these gene types, but (approximately) only 1 in 30 of these people will get coeliac disease. A child of a parent carrying this disease has a ten precent chance of also having it. In the case of twins there is a seventy percent chance that if one child has it the other will also but sometimes it doesn’t present itself immediately in the other child. Environmental changes can play a big role in triggering the disease in infants or other stages of life. People with celiac disease have to stick to a strict diet and be careful not to consume any foods that even contain traces of gluten. They also have to make sure they don’t use products like lip balm or cosmetics containing gluten or other wheat products.
